Well, of course when you think of going ANYWHERE in the WHOLE WORLD… well then you naturally think of Riverside, California. Right?
I mean, I do.
The Mission Inn Hotel is at 3649 Mission Inn Avenue, Riverside CA 92501
It is Spanish architecture that almost appears Gaudi-esque. Without the nonsense of having to travel to Spain.
I’ve got some beef with Spain that isn’t fully worked out. I think its due to my mom’s trip there years ago. She was wearing too much Gap clothing and they thought she was a lesbian. They were mean and I was mad for her. She said she had to wear ALL her jewelry (which would look ridiculous with Gap khaki's) the whole time and gush about her husband. Yawn. Then they accepted her. Thank god for alcohol.
But back to The Mission Inn.
A while back I was doing some show for the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and they had some awards for hotels. ... and there it was, this beautiful hotel that looked like it was a scene for a movie. And ultimately had been many, many times before. I did some follow-up research on the place and found out some of my favorite authors had holed up there in the 20’s on the roof rooms, not paying rent and being all artsy and antagonistic. Stories say that the hotel’s owner pissed off the Tiffany family by not selling them one of their prized bells... and I was in love. I’ve been wanting to go there for over a decade. But honestly, I just never turned up anywhere near Riverside where I could grab the chance.
So, it is still on my bucket list. If you go please rub it in and send me photos.
I, of course took a little look-i-loo around the internet to see if there were other places I should have picked and I found this article on BoredPanda.com about the 25+ Coolest Hotels. You should check it out. There is some weird shit in there. As I was scrolling through the places I kept muttering to myself “ugh, another round room. no.” and “definitely gonna be bugs there” on multiple other ones. But cool stuff that I had fun perusing.
