I dislike Summer. Winter is my favorite season. I like the cold, I hate the heat.
That being said, our air conditioning has been broken since Sunday or Monday. We only discovered it Tuesday morning when it was 80 degrees in the house and the thermostat was set to 67 and not getting any colder. I went downstairs to discover ice forming around the some of the pipes on the furnace unit. Hoping that it was the ice causing the issue, I turned it all off and watched the ice melt in desperation as the house got hotter and hotter. I turned to opening all the windows and turning on the fans, it didn’t really help, but I had to feel useful. After a day of defrosting, the unit would turn on for a minute before turning itself off and started clicking. Not usually a good sign of functionality.
So Wednesday the search for a service tech began. Who knew it was so hard to find somebody to come out to service your AC unit in April. I called 5 companies and they all estimated the earliest they could get to the house was Friday, but most likely Monday. I figured by then I would be a puddle because I don’t like heat and it was getting humid too. I needed somebody immediately!!! Finally, I got a company to agree to Thursday. 24 hours away. I can figure something out. I was going to work Wednesday night, so that’s 10 hours out of the house and the gym is close by. I can go there for an hour or two. I’ll get sweaty but I’m already sweaty at least I can watch TV and sweat in cool air.
Thursday afternoon, AC service guy shows up!! I could hug him, but that would prevent him from doing his job. I walked him through the house showing him what I did to the unit and the circuit breakers and how I used the internet to try to take it apart to fix our lack of AC. Then I left him to ponder my handiwork. He walked in and out of the basement a few times, I heard the heat pump turn on twice and was getting very excited by the movement and sounds. 30 minutes later, I hear him come up the stairs from the basement, but recognize the lack of AC sounds in the house. He had the look; the “I want to tell you bad news but you might Kung-Fu me.” So it turns out that our motor and control board is broken, along with that, we would need to do some cleaning and servicing, for a grand total of $2000. Well, for that price, we would have to leave the AC off for the summer to save enough on our electric bill to afford a new unit. I’m going to get price quotes for a replacement unit in the am after the Royal Wedding. I bet they’ll never have to worry about broken AC units.
